Personalities of Epirots in the Romanian lands during the later Balkan Middle Ages (Τίτλος περίληψης)

The migration, or in other aspect, the travel activity of the Epirots in the now current area of Romania is known, as is the liberality which characterized some eminent representatives of this Diaspora. However, the Greek historical research rarely examines the above phenomena in a chronological perspective that goes further back than the 18 century. For this reason the goal of the author is to depict the direct effect of the Epirots’ presence in the Romanian principalities of Walachia and Moldavia during the 16th and the first decades of the 17th century.
This epoch can be characterized as the later Balkan Middle Ages, in so far as the Northern Balkans were under the influence of a prolonged medieval way of thinking which determined the establishment of this early Epirot Diaspora. For the better understanding of the mentality in question, emphasis is given on the revealing testimony of the narrative sources, without however ignoring the multitude of other witnesses. Of course, consideration was accorded to prior bibliography and especially the monograph of Ariadna CAMARIANO-CIORAN, L’Epire et les Pays roumains, Ioannina 1984. Nevertheless, some previous opinions are systema¬tically revised.
The present article, after an extensive introduction, is composed of seven chapters describing personalities of Epirot ancestry in the Romanian principalities. It should be noted that these components for practical reasons do not adhere to the conventional chronological lineage. The personalities that are their subject exist in the Romanian lands either as prominent laymen, noblemen or merchants, sometimes functioning in both qualities, or as high clergymen. An attempt is made to find common characteristics of the behavior, which the Epirots then showed in the north of the Danube as well as in the Greek area, and primarily in their homeland. Noted are also some facts that are manifested in conjunction with their ideological aspirations. The article finally attempts to pinpoint the strategies that improved their social standing and even more their placement within the closed upper circle of the Romanian aristocracy
