The iconographic cycle of St. Nikolaos at Sarakinishte in Lunxheri (Τίτλος περίληψης)
Description
The church of Saint Nikolaos at Sarakinishte of Lunxheri in Southern Albania is a cemetery church. It belongs to the cross-in-square type (Quincunx) with a dome and a narthex and, according to the relevant inscription, it was painted in 1630.
Apart from other iconographic cycles, the master-painter Michael and his fellows Constantine and Nikolaos from Linotopi of Kastoria painted 16 scenes from the Life and Miracles of Saint Nikolaos. It seems that in the second zone of frescoes the painter and his colleagues replaced the cycle of the Akathist Hymn with the cycle of the honored saint, while a few scenes of the Akathist were observed in the altar. The painter had a full range of anthivola (sketches) in his disposal, therefore the iconographic cycle, which has been preserved in this church, is among the richest ever existed. Unfortunately, it has not been preserved at a good state of preservation. The narration of Symeon the Traslator, recorded in the Menaion of December, was used as a basis for the painting of this iconographic cycle.
The cycle consists in 16 scenes classified according to their thematic unit:
1-2. The birth of the Saint and his guidance according to the relevant inscriptions.
3-5. The Saint was ordinated as a deacon, priest and bishop. Inscriptions.
6. The Saint gave mercy to the father in need, providing a dowry for each of his three daughters. Inscription faded.
7. The Saint saved the ship in his travel to Jerusalem. Inscription.
8. The Saint returned from Jerusalem to his fatherland Patara by a miraculous way. Inscription.
9. The Saint was arrested and led to prison for his faith. Inscription faded.
10. The Saint destroyed the idol-altars and he cuts the tree of the demons. Inscription faded.
11. The Saint participated in the 1st Ecumenical Synod and gives a slap to Areios, reason for which he is imprisoned. Inscription.
12. The Saint saved from famine the city of Myra by offering three silver coins to a sailor-tradesman to transport wheat from Jerusalem to Myra. Inscription.
13. The Saint released three innocent people sentenced to death from the sword of their executioner. Inscription.
14. The Saint saved three slandered and imprisoned generals by appearing into the dreams of the general Avlavios and the emperor Contantine and ordering the release of the innocent generals. Inscription destroyed.
15-16. The Dormition of the Saint and the miracle of Artemis at sea. Inscription destroyed.
The last scene of the cycle of Saint Nikolaos was the miracle of Artemis, which took place after the saint’s death, reason for which it was placed in the end of the cycle, as the painter followed absolute chronological order in the events of the cycle. The artist painted successfully all the events of the cycle, conveying the symbols of the objects
