| heal.abstract | The aim of this article is to reconstruct the relationship between cinema as the eminently new work of art and its political function in Benjamin’s essay “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction”. It intends to illuminate a web of concepts reflecting the complex relation between aesthetics and politics. The first part briefly discusses the profound change in the notion of the work of art caused by its technical reproduction. Benjamin describes this change as a process of liberating art from its ritual origins and refounding it in the realm of politics. The second part reconstructs Benjamin’s understanding of politics. It argues that Benjamin’s concept of politics is indebted to the notion of second nature, as elaborated in the tradition of critical theory. In relation to this notion of politics, the third part of the article elaborates on the emancipatory relationship between a work of art and its audience rendered possible by cinema. The article concludes with a comment on the negation of such emancipatory possibilities, as expressed in what Benjamin called the ‘aestheticization of politics’. | en |
