heal.abstractThe writer of this study reaches the following conclusions. i. The little church outside the town of Kos, in the area of Kokkinonero and Vourina, is dedicated to a local saint named Melo. The name has nothing to do with either St Melani or any epithet applied to the Panayia. Troparia dedicated to Melo and preserved in Par. gr. 1362, f. 267r v attest that she actually existed. She was probably buried on the site of the church, in the place where she had retired from the world to lead the ascetic life. ii. The composer of the troparia, Metropolitan Mitrofanis, is identified as the scholarly and ‘saintly’ Orthodox prelate of that name, who was Metropolitan of Rhodes at the end of the fifteenth century, in the time of the Knights of St John. It was at this time that the archiepiscopate of Kos was ceded to Rhodes, which explains Mitrofanis’s spiritual interest in Kos, for he seems to have had first-hand knowledge of details of Melo's monastic life. iii. Melo probably lived in the Byzantine period or during the rule of the Knights. Recent archaeological findings attest that the church dates to the fifteenth century. It is reminiscent of a burial monument. It must be hoped that forthcoming excavations will produce firm proof of the identity of this forgotten saint.en
