Influences of the Ancient Greek thought on the Arabic culture (Τίτλος περίληψης)
Περιγραφή
The paper aims at giving a short account of the influences the ancient Greek medical, philosophical and scientific thought exerted on the genesis and the formation of the medieval Arabic culture. The degree of acceptance of Greek authorities in the court and some circles of the 'Abbasid society in the 9th c. A. D. is illustrated by the dream of al-Ma’mun and other stories. There follows a short account of the infiltration of Greek thought through the Persian and Syrian traditions into the Islamic society and culture now under formation. Next, examples are given of some of the most important ancient Greek works in the fields of medicine, philosophy, mathematics and other sciences translated into Arabic, with references to patrons and distinguished translators. Finally, it is shown that the Muslims, (Arabs and non-Arabs), not only studied the translated Greek originals but also wrote commentaries and independent treatises on the problems raised by these works. Furthermore, they adopted the literary forms, the reasoning and argumentation developed by the Greeks, and initiated a tradition in the Arabic language in mathematics, technology, medicine and philosophy. Even the pure Islamic sciences, i.e. grammar, philology, Qur’anic studies, theology, and law, were influenced by the Greek art of argumentation, especially the syllogism.
