The roles of emotions in Spinoza’s theory of transindividualityen
The purpose of this thesis is the study of emotions and their role in Spinoza’s ethical and political theory. At the same time, we attempt to approach and comprehend the concept of transindividuality (transindividualite), although it does not directly appears in Spinoza’s philosophical system. For this reason, we try to identify the concept itself based on the philosophical interpretations of Ε. Balibar and P.F Moreau who critically apply the ideas of Al. Matheron to appoint transindividuality in the philosopher’s system. This paper consists of three parts. In particular, the first part discusses the historical and social framework in which the philosopher lived and developed his ideas and work. The second part deals with the concept of individuality. We considered this necessary in order to proceed to the understanding of transindividuality. The study of emotions takes place in the third and last part where we analyse their different types and roles in relation not only to every individual but also to the social and political life. Lastly, taking into consideration this challenging enterprise to approach a difficult concept as that, we came to the conclusion that Spinoza’s ontological theory is undoubtedly innovative in the way he constructs the concept of the individual and individuality and should not be confused with intersubjectivity. Ethics is an excellent example of the analysis of the interpersonal and social relations not only to an ethical perspective but also at the political level that allow us to agree that the ontology of relation or in other words, transindividuality can be detected in Spinoza’s philosophy.en
