heal.abstract | In this study we would like to present four anthropomorphic pottery figurines which have been found in Neolithic Thessaly. Three of them come the area of Tricala, which is almost unknown in the scientific research of the prehistory. The first of the figurines is a woman sitting on the ground and originated from the “Plakes” range, near by the village of Gomphoi. It belongs to the Τ.ΙΙΙ.γ. group, b' series of the G. Hourmousiadis typology. The other two idols are a man and a woman in erect position, originated from Megalo Kefalovriso I, Tricala, come which are belonging to the groups T.I.F., a' series and T.III. a, v' series, correspondingly. There is also a fourth figurine of a woman. This figurine belonging to the G. Racatsanis family and dates its origin from the village of Sykourion, near the city of Larissa. This figurine also belongs to type Τ.ΙΙΙ.γ, b' series. All idols date back to the Early or the Middle Neolithic period with the exception on the artifacts founted at the Megalo Kefalovriso I, in the district of Tricala. which dates back to the Early Neolithic period according to the stratigraphy elements. Furthermore, we wish to draw attention to certain considerations and observations on the Neolithic idoloplastic, with particular reference to the area of Thessaly. The question is whether there existed a nucleus of skilled idolmakers in the Neolithic community and also the interpretation made to the two most widely conceptions concerning the Neolithic idols of religion and magic is exposed to some criticism. The relationship of such idols to any system of organised religion life is to be rejected although we partially accept that there are elements of the magic thought in the ideological behaviour of the Neolithic society. Which may bear some connection to certain category of figurines. We therefore conclude that there were two general groups of Neolithic idols, namely: a. Idols with a “magic” content in a manner satisfying the economic needs of the community. | |
