A brief report about the ecclesiastic matters of Cephalonia and Ithaca. Written in the middle of 17th century by thw delegate of Propaganda Fide Gabriel Angelo Rossi (Τίτλος περίληψης)

Description

In Archivo Storico della Sacra Congregazione de Propaganda Fide there is a group of documents refering to monk Gabriel Angelo Rossi. They are kept in the file Nr 285 of the department SOCG. This file also contains documents concerning Cephalonia. Among them there is a brief report about the Ionian Islands Corfu, Zante. Cephalonia and Ithaca, based on information compiled by Rossi during the period of 1648 to 1656. These years Rossi was sent to the Ionian Islands by Propaganda Fide. The documents containing information about the author and the part of the report which concerns Cephalonia and Ithaca are transcribed and published in this essay. Rossi belonged to the Order of the Missionarii of Saint Francis. He was born in Milano and was one of the missionaries working for Propaganda Fide. Submiting his report, Rossi also claimed the title of Dottore in Theology, which he finally received inspite of his unsuccessful missionary effort. This part of the report is found between sheets 91 and 94. According to the report, Cephalonia had 200 villages and 3 important ports. The latin churches are mentioned and briefly depicted. The monastery of Sissia (Madona d' Assisi), said to be founded by Saint Francis, is profoundly described in this report. The author emphasizes that the villages are Greek (sono tutte greche) and he provides some information about its orthodox clergy. He mentioned that Ithaca had three important costal villages with safe ports. For his unsuccessful work he accused the inhabitants for having a low educational level. Although the people of the island were poor, they had a long life. Many of them used to immigrate temporarily to the main land, which was occupied by the Turks, in order to insure part of their provisions.
