heal.abstractDuring the Second period of the Education of the Ionian State (United States of the Ionian Islands, Stati Uniti delle Isole Jonie), Zakynthos presents no differentiation in the educational programmes set by the Central Govemement. There were no creative initiatives or known reactions, as well. And this, because the times were under the pressure of the bad administration, the vast national debt of the State itself, and of the political turmoil, as a result of the national revolutions in Europe generally and the rebellions in Cephalonia particularly. Apart from these, the repetitive destruction of the agricultural production and the numerous plagues prevented the development of private education. Consequently, the attempt of L. I. Martzokis to update his private school into a middle grade educational house of high expectations in September of 1847 did not give fruits. The most characteristic feature of this period was the opposition by the Radicals, who included education in their programme. Still, the did not achieve any significant results. The movements in and out of the Ionian Parliament did not bring any improvement to the State education, apart from the thesis by Hermannos count Lunzis on the “Organisation of the Public education” (1857). With all these, the education in Zakynthos, public and private, of the first and the second grade, during this very period, as well as during periods of the United States of the Ionian Islands, presents special interest. And this, because with all the active ideological problems, it corresponded to the needs of the population and it had a positive contribution to the improvement of the society.en
