heal.abstractThe focus of this study, a rather extented article, composed, after a painstankigly and exchausting research of archival sources, is the unique phenomenon of massive collaboration of the indigenous political and social elites and the primitive native populous of a secrion of the south-west of the island of Leukas-Santa Maura, collectively known as nationalists', with the Axis forces that had occupied Greece in 1941-1944. Furthermore, the starking differentiation, the social cleavage, between the socialy and culturaly backward primitive south-west of the island and the articulate eastern fertile plains of Leukas. The same, notwithstanding, the traditional way of life, hold true for the less articulate illiterate peoples of a section of western Acamania. But the tour de force is the demonstrated identification of the said nationalists with Greek resistance organization known as EDES, the partisan group founded and sustained by the British diplomacy and military. The later sustained them under its auspices, protected them and provided them with dignity, authority and social acceptance. Notwithstanding, the odium of the former’s role as instruments of the German policies on Greece, the state, the Greek government established by the British in Athens on October 1944, not only sanctioned Zerva’s policies on the matter, but absolved the Quislings, reinstated them in the body politic and rehabilitated them moraly. In the turbulent years that followed they became the stalwarts of the post war regimes.en
