| heal.abstract | N. G. Politis, the founder of the Greek Folklore science, had already introduced since 1884 the word 'λαογραφία' (Laographia) in order to name the new science whose object was the traditional popular culture. (In England it was already known as Folklore/1846 and in Germany as Volkskunde/1858). During the period of the heirs of Alexander the Great and especially at its last years the word 'λαογραφία' had a different meaning. It meant, infact, the poll tax that certain groups of citizens in Egypt had to pay; it also meant the recording of statistical data. This brief article examines at length the two above mentioned meanings and adds some more details to the history of the word 'λαογραφία' (Laographia). | en |
