The influence of BaO additives in Al2O3-SiO2 ceramics in the reaction between ceramics and aluminium foundry alloys was investigated under vacuum within 750-1100 degreesC and 30 minutes to 24 hours. A 10-vol% BaO resulted in optimum porosity and the narrowest reaction-zone. As soon as the liquid Al-alloy wets the ceramic, reaction occurs. Reaction-zone generally widens with time and temperature and is a result of the reduction of the phases, which contain SiO2 and BaO, due to the penetration of molten Al through the porous structure. The reduction products, Ba and Si, gave rise to small metallic particles with a composition of 30Al-12Ba-Si, which could randomly form in the metal side and on the ceramic surface, depending on the temperature and/or holding time.en
