| heal.abstract | Η παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία αποσκοπεί στην ανάδειξη των παραγόντων που επηρεάζουν τις εξαγωγές και τις εισαγωγές αγροτικών προϊόντων της Ιαπωνίας και τις συνέπειες που επωμίστηκαν από το πυρηνικό ατύχημα στην Φουκουσίμα το 2011. Χρησιμοποιώντας τα τελευταία διαθέσιμα πάνελ δεδομένα από τις χώρες όλου του κόσμου με τις οποίες η Ιαπωνία διατηρεί διμερής εμπορικές σχέσεις για τα έτη 2000 έως 2016 εκτιμούμε ένα μοντέλο βαρύτητας. Με την χρήση του εκτιμητή PPML τα αποτελέσματα καταδεικνύουν ότι αφενός οι εξαγωγές αγροτικών προϊόντων μειώθηκαν μετά το πυρηνικό ατύχημα, ωστόσο, μόνο μέχρι το έτος 2014. Αφετέρου, οι εισαγωγές αγροτικών προϊόντων προς την Ιαπωνία εξακολούθησαν έως και το 2016 να είναι θετικές και αυξημένες. | el |
| heal.abstract | The devastating consequences of a nuclear accident can significantly affect the social and economic situation of a country. The 2011 nuclear accident at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant in Japan affected both the national economy of Japan as well as the global economy. It caused radical infection of all organisms (plants, animals, etc.) as well as their byproducts (milk, meat, etc.). As a result, Japan’s trade in agricultural products was negatively affected. International trade and the globalization of the markets contributed to the spillover of the economic effects to the rest of the world. This research contributes to the literature by exploring the effects that the 2011 nuclear accident in Fukushima had on the determinants of Japan's exports and imports of agricultural products. The effects on trade reflect not only the direct impact of the nuclear accident on economic variables but also the dynamics of consumer trust, both domestic and foreign, for Japanese products. We use panel data for the years 2000 to 2016 for all the countries with which Japan maintains bilateral trade relationships and a gravity approach that employs the Poisson Pseudo-Maximum Likelihood estimator (PPML). Results suggest that the Fukushima nuclear accident in 2011 had a significant negative impact on Japan's trade resulting in a 12.8% decrease in the value of agricultural exports between 2011 and 2014. The negative consequences of the nuclear accident on Japan’s exports however weakened after 2015 suggesting that consumers partly regained their trust for Japanese agricultural products. With respect to the imports we find that between 2011 and 2014 the value of imports increased by 16.4% suggesting a substitution of domestic consumption of agricultural products with imports. | en |
