Description
The present MA thesis deals with the Leges Novellae of emperor Leo VI and is divided into two parts. In the first of them, the emperor’s life is briefly presented, as well as the key facts that marked his political career and his choice on different subjects. Moreover, the narrative of his turbulent personal life and of the birth of his only and most desired son and heir to the throne is included. In addition, Leo’s domestic and foreign policies are explained, the ultimate goal of which is a better and complete understanding of the emperor’s personality and way of thinking. The second part of the thesis is focused on the 113 leges novellae that the emperor released during his reign. For a better examination of them, they are separated according to the kind of law to which they belong (i.e. canon law, secular law etc) and on the basis of the subject that they refer to. The analysis of each Novel is related to the decisions that were in force at that time and it is based on Justinian’s leges novellae and on the canons of the Ecumenical Councils and of other local ecclesiastical councils. Thus, for each case, the current provision of that time is described, alongside its reversal or ratification in Leo’s novels. In this way, it is easier for someone to understand the contribution of the emperor to the people’s daily life. Finally, in this study remarks and comments on the novels are included, wherever possible.
