| heal.abstract | In this article an attempt has been made to demonstrate and analyze the portrait of Heraclius as viewed by western sources. Comments on him by western writers, largely reflect legendary powers and characteristics which hardly reflect his picture as shown through Byzantine sources. A great deal of emulation and exaggeration means that sources of the eleventh and twelfth century grant to him such elements as fighting a duel with the Persian king, as were popular with knights and warriors of the west, unlike the heroic element in Byzantine sources that is kept at more realistic proportions. More interesting however, is the attribution of astronomical and mathematical knowledge to him, and thus the ability to foresee the future, a pure western fabrication. A killer of a dragon and an astrologer and mathematician emperor can well fit with eschatological tastes, largely flourishing in the thirteenth century. Western Heraclius only retains a rudimentary similarity with real Heraclius, and would be totally unrecognized by his Byzantine contemporaries. | en |
