The scribe Philotheos Abbot of the Monasteyr of Hierax in Cyprus (16th century A.D.)
Περιγραφή
Codex Vaticanus Ottobonianus Gr. 25 containing the works of Abbas Neilus was copied by the scribe Philotheos for the Latin Archbishop of Cyprus Philippo Mocenigo in 1564 /65.
At the end of the manuscript Philotheos gives us in a dedicatory poem the very details of the transcription of this codex from a volume in the monastery tbn Andreion in Nicosia. It is in this monastery that a famous scribe, Ambrosios, flourished in the second third of the sixteenth century. Philotheos’ handwriting, especially his colophon, is similar to the well-known script of Ambrosios. It appears that Philotheos may well have worked in the scriptorium of the monastery ton Andreion before he became hegoumenos of the monastery of Hierax. Another Cypriot scribe, Loukas of Buzau, who took refuge and became famous outside Cyprus, after the island had been occupied by the Turks in 1570/71, may also have been instructed in the skill of copying books in this scriptorium of Nicosia. Evidence, however, for the possible teacher-student relation between the three men is still missing and further study on these copyists may prove fruitful.
