| heal.abstract | The paper discusses the relation between historical-comparative linguistics and classical philology, suggesting an interdisciplinary linguistic and philological approach to the study of classical texts, and stressing the need for a comparative perspective: classical philology must be placed in the broader frame of the cognate philological traditions of the Indo-European linguistic family. As case studies for the method suggested here are discussed selected problems from the area of eymology (e.g., the etymology of Gk. άναξ, words deriving from the IE root *h2ag'1 such as αγών, άγαθός, etc.,) and syntagmatics and thema- tics (e.g., the IE formulaic syntagm *(hz)nomn dheh^ "put/make a name”, as attested in Gk. άνομα τίθεσθαι, Lat. nomen facio \indo, Skt. n&ma dha-, Hitt, laman dai-, etc.). This approach may lead to the conclusion that certain features (linguistic, literary or cultural) that are commonly thought to be characteristics of the Greek and/or Latin languages or philologies may ultimately prove to be instances or survivals of a broader and much older common tradition of Indo-European provenience. In this respect the benefits of the widening of the method and seeing classical philology within the comparative socio-historical, philological, and linguistic context of Indo-European are obvious. | en |
