The influence of BaO additives in Al2O3-SiO2 Ceramics on the reaction between ceramics and aluminium foundry alloys was investigated under vacuum within 750-1100degreesC and 0.5 to 24 hours. A 10-vol% BaO resulted in optimum porosity and the narrowest reaction-zone. As soon as the liquid Al-alloy wets the ceramic, reaction occurs. Reaction-zone generally widens with time and temperature and is a result of the reduction of the phases, which contain SiO2 and BaO, due to the penetration of molten At through the porous structure. The reduction products, Ba and Si, gave rise to small metallic particles with a composition of 30Al-12Ba-58Si, which randomly formed in the rnetal-side of the interface, depending on the temperature and/or holding time.en
