| heal.abstract | The probability for small molecules to travel between two points in space under diffusion and stirring in a time t is determined and used to find the amount of mass transferred from a polymer matrix into solution. Both diffusion and stirring govern the behaviour of the migrants; diffusion depends on the mean value of the diffusion coefficient and stirring forces the particles to move in a specific manner. The results of g.c. experiments, measuring the number of dioctylphthalate plasticizer molecules diffusing from the matrix of a poly(vinyl chloride) film into an oil solvent, with and without stirring, confirm the theoretical relationships. | en |
