The narthex of the Chapels of St. John the Baptist and the Virgin Mary is located above the Lite on the first floor of the Katholikon of Dousikon Monastery, a few miles from the town of Trikala in Thessaly. It is a rectangular room with an entrance at the west. According to the inscription, the narthex was painted by Constantine the priest in 1739. He was a talented and well-known painter, who had worked both in Fthiotida, and the area of Agrafa before coming to the monastery of Dousikon, which appears to have been his last known assignment work. The iconographic programme of the narthex is well preserved. It includes scenes from the Genesis (Creation of the World and the story of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel), the hymn Epi Soi Chairei (In Thee Rejoiceth), the Beheading of St. John the Baptist, the Life of St. Anthony, the Dormition of Saint Ephraim the Syrian as well as that of St. John Chrysostom. New Hartyrs are also depicted on medals. The painter is characterized by eclecticism and selective disposal regarding iconographic types of scenes. Most of the iconographic types adopt standards of the Cretan School, also known from other examples in the area during the 18th century, while others (such as the Creation of the World and the In Thee Rejoiceth) are influenced by Western art. There are also references to Byzantine models, such as the depiction of St. Christopher. Regarding the stylistic characteristics, the scenes of the monument are distinguished for their harmony in design and well-balanced performance of individual components. Graphs with sole or crowded forms dominate the space with their volume, their expressive movements and the fluttering garments. The meretricious combination of vibrant colours and meticulous placing on portraiture performance’s characteristics leads to a truly remarkable result. The creative assimilation and use of elements of the Palaeologan and post-Byzantine iconographic tradition of the wider area of Thessaly, the reconciliation with motifs of the two dominant artistic movements of the 16th century and knowledge of the painting tradition of the Ionian Islands suggest the high artistic background of our painter. They also identify the creation of an original work, which integrated into the artistic tradition of that time.en
