Description

In this article it is sought to shed light on the totally unexplored G. Skleros’ early intellectual formation. Noteworthy, for that period, is his participation in the Russian “liberal” circle of the Student Historical-Philosophical Society (Studenskoe Istoriko-Filologicheskoe obshtestvo), founded in 1902 by the prince S.N. Trubetskoi, Professor of Philosophy at the Moscow University. Emphasis is given to the trip to Athens and the main Greek archaeological sites (Delphi, Olympia etc.) organized by the members of the above-mentioned Society, in August 1903. On the base of a wider research of the relevant rich reports of the Athenian Press as well as of the Russian educational /social demands of the fin-de-siecle period, namely when Students struggled in order to gain University autonomy towards the tsar, it is attempted to comprehend Skleros’ worldview-formation. In this way and within this historical frame, the Marxist influence, a few months afterwards, exerted upon Skleros by G. Plekhanov’s work -a well- documented topic in the recent research- becomes better understood as an intellectual reorientation of his.
