heal.abstract | The reaction between Al2O3-SiO2 ceramics in the presence of BaO and a typical aluminium alloy (type "356.0") with Si as a major alloy element has been investigated within 800-1050degreesC and holding times from 4h to 24h, under vacuum. SEM, XRD and EDS techniques employed, revealed a thin Al2O3-based and homogeneous reaction-zone at the ceramic/metal interface towards the ceramic. In the metal side, small particles with a nominal composition 30Al12Ba-58Si were randomly adhered at the interface. Temperature and holding time increases the thickness of the reaction-zone. Generally, BaO reduces the porosity of Al2O3-SiO2 ceramics (from 35% to 5%) and narrows the thickness of the reaction-zone in the ceramic side. | en |
