| heal.abstract | From the study of hagiographic texts it is possible to establish various trends in the monastic community. During the early period the dominant feature is the «non conformist» monk, occasionally called a «Fool». However, in the seventh century this «non-conformist» monk opens himself to society and becomes an essential port of it. In the twelfth century appears another feature: The Vitae, written in colloquial language, present the Saint as a hero of the «every-day» common-sense. This development is parallel to the new image of the emperor, as found in the historiographic sources. The ancient ideals of a monarch: piety, righteousness etc. in the eleventh century give their place to new ideals, such as brave deeds and noble birth. | en |
