| heal.abstract | This paper recounts the earliest outbreak of the Greek Revolution in the Danubian Principalities (February - June 1821) and studies its failure. This campaign was poorly planned, because Alexander Hypsilantis, the Greek leader thought that as soon as the operations commenced, the Russian army would intervene, as Russia had been granted the protection of this territory by the treaty of Ku^uk Kaynarca (1774) and would consider Ottoman military movements in the area as a hostile act. Furthermore, the inimical reaction of the population both in Moldavia and Wallachia is examined in depth. The author accepts that the inhabitants were either thinking in terms of their own independence, both from the Turks and the Greek Phanariot rule, or were completely uninterested in fighting and at the ideas of freedom and independence. As a conclusion it can be said that this brief campaign was useful as it allowed the war to gain momentum in the Morea on one hand and on the other to attract European attention and draw their interest in Southern Greece. Finally, it divided the Ottoman forces and weakened their military response to the Greek Revolution. | en |
