| heal.abstract | The existing bibliography provides special references on the presence and activities of the Ionian people in Romania and the Danube area as well as the city of Vraila. The fact has been pointed out by N. Jorga who reports that the largest number of the Greeks in Vraila came from the Ionian Islands. Recently, (1996) Cornelia Papacosta Danielopolu and later Christian Filip (the second under the supervision of the noted historian Olga Cicanci) provided important information, showing that the Ionians played a significant role in the commerce and shipping of the Danube. They even noted that among the Ionians who settled there, the presence of the Cephalonians was especially strong. That same fact is documented, once more, in the list of members of the Greek Community of Vraila, published in this study, showing that 40% of the Greeks that settled there came from the Ionian Islands. This report by the Greek Consul in Vraila, written after a relative circular (28445) of the Greek Department of Foreign Affairs, provides a brief historical account of the life and activities of the Greek Community, concluding in a distinct picture of its status at a crucial time (1914) when the first Balkan Wars had broken out. The report itself is then a condensed monograph of the Greek Community of Vraila, promoting research based on the new facts provided and confirming older information. The new facts, referring to their endeavors in strengthening the community, education, establishment of a church, their economic situation, as well as listing by name more than 183 members of the Community, can be usefully analyzed and compared to those of independent Greece, the Ionian Islands and the areas where Greek people are still in bondage. | en |
