Monitore Settinsulare 1803-1806: a rare newspaper printed in the Heptanesos (Τίτλος περίληψης)

Περιγραφή

Monitore Settinsulare was the second newspaper published in the federal state of the Ionic Greeks (Gazzetta Urbana was the first). Practically it was the first published by the state itself and that is why it has been called “official in a certain way”. As there was no constitutional or other way to protect the press, the fact that the publication of the second was the reason to stop the publication of Gazzetta Urbana is not accidental. It can be added that the owner and director of Gazzetta Urbana was Dionysios Sarantopoulos, the lessee of the state printing house (Marios Pieris and Andreas Moustoxydis were the editors). Till today there were references to Monitore Settinsulare. However, there was not a clear picture of it, because no full series of it was available and even the available issues of it were extremely rare, a real object of desire for the collectors. Even well known bibliographies do not have references to it. And when somebody would expect the investigation to give fruits in Corfu, the place of printing, the only known corpus of the newspaper survived in Zante, against the hazards and the plunders, in the library of the counts Lunzis family. This happened because Hermannos count Lunzis (1806-1868) bought the newspaper in order to use it as a source for his work Della Repubblica Settinsulare. The newspaper was published weekly, was written in italian and was printed on heavy paper, possibly Italian, in two columns, in quarto size, in four pages, of dimensions 38 X 24,5 cm. In the middle of the frontispiece there was a figure of Hermes holding in his left hand a comet and in his right a flag of the Republica Settinsulare. The reason of this figure was to connect the present of the Republic with the Hellenic past and the understanding of the Italian Monitore with the Hellenic Μηνύτωρ - Messenger. Hermes divides the title REPUBBLICA SETTINSUL(ARE) and the satin numbe¬ring, which is in decorative lines. He is above of the title, which is walled of the place and the date of publication (in the three first issues only in the Julian - old calendar, in the following also in the Gregorian - new). The page numbering is on the right top comer in Arabic numbers. Monitore Settinsulare (1803 - 1805) - Η δυσεύρετη εφημερίδα της Επτάνησου Πολιτείας 157 The most considerable differentiations are: 1. Dimensions: three issues were printed in 36.5 X 24.5 cm, one in 36 X 23 cm and two in 32.5 X 23.5 cm. 2. Title: in four cases the decorative lines are erased or the place and time of printing change position. 3. Numbering of issues and pages: the Latin numbering is kept from number 1 (June 10,1803) p. 1 till number 80 (Dec. 31,1803 / Jan. 12, 1804) p. 317-320 and then it continues in Arabic numbers till the last issue, number 1 (Jan. 5/13,1804), p. 1 till number 22 (Nov. 4/16,1805), pp. 85-88. The language used in the newspaper is Italian, a fact that can be used by the Greek bibliographies for omitting it. In this short paper there is no space for lengthy arguments. However, it is reminded that the Greek language in the beginning of the 19^ ce., used by the Hellenic element of the islands, was left uncultivated, in contrast with the Italian, which was prevailing among those who had access to a journal or a newspaper. The problem was well known and torturing for the Greek scholars, and it was faced after 20 years of Hellenic education by Andreas Kalvos, who asked for a solution of the problem of the non existed terminology. The newspaper includes internal and external news. Among the internal ones there are legislations of the government or the Senate, official speeches and political news, as well as the initiations of the Minister Plenipotentiary of the Czar George count Mocenigo (who was acting as a commissionaire) and of the army (of the Republic and the Russian ones). The external news were consisting of republishing of civil or military news from newspapers or journals of the old and new world. The newspaper presents the current news such as the activities of the Prince President Antonios count Comutos or the Senator Dionysios count Romas, as well as correspondences of other political activities. Of more general interest are the legislations of the Government, the activities of politicians such as Mocenigo, Kapodistria and Theotokis, the combat of Souliotes against Ali Pasha, and the approach of well known events by the European press. Ofcource there is also the so called little history, such as the presentation to the Prince President of the Spanish ambassador Lorenzo y Mabilli, grandfather of the Garibaldine heroe of Driskos, Corfiot poet Lorenzos Mavilis. Monitore Settinsulare was one of the first Greek newspapers, even if it was speaking Italian. The hearts of its editors were Greek. For this reason a place in the head of Greek speaking journalism is kept for it.
