heal.abstract	Τα μεγαλύτερα έθνη της αρχαίας Ηπείρου ήταν οι Χάονες, οι Θεσπρωτοί, οι Μολοσσοί και οι Κασσωπαίοι. Οι Χάονες αποτελούσαν το βορειοδυτικό έθνος της ηπειρωτικής επικράτειας και το σύνορο του ελληνισμού έναντι των ιλλυρικών φύλων. Στον σύγχρονο χάρτη η Χαονία καταλάμβανε, κατά το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της ιστορικής περιόδου, τη σημερινή νοτιοδυτική Αλβανία. Σύμφωνα με τις αρχαίες παραδόσεις, στα παράλιά της έπλεαν και έπειτα εγκαταστάθηκαν, Αργοναύτες, Κόλχοι, Αχαιοί και Τρώες ήρωες, Φαίακες, καθώς και Φοίνικες, Ευβοείς, Κορίνθιοι, Κερκυραίοι, Ρωμαίοι κλπ., γεγονός που καταδεικνύει τόσο την κομβική της θέση επί των χερσαίων και κυρίως επί των θαλασσίων οδών, που συνέδεαν, οικονομικά και πολιτιστικά, τον Βορρά με τον Νότο, την Ανατολή με τη Δύση, όσο και τον φυσικό πλούτο της περιοχής, τον οποίο εποφθαλμιούσαν, καθ’ όλη τη διάρκεια της αρχαιότητας, όμορες και μη, «συγγενείς» και αλλότριες, εθνικές-βασιλικές και αστικές-πολιτικές δυνάμεις. Η παρούσα εργασία επικεντρώνεται, με την αρωγή των σημαντικότερων γραμματειακών, νομισματικών, επιγραφικών και ανασκαφικών δεδομένων, στην εξέταση και την παρουσίαση των κυριότερων γεωγραφικών, γεωφυσικών, οικονομικών και φυλετικών παραγόντων, που διαμόρφωσαν την κοινωνική, πολιτική και πολιτιστική ταυτότητα του έθνους των Χαόνων, η οποία κατηύθυνε την πορεία του μέσα στον χρόνο, ενώ η τελευταία αυτή επέδρασε, ως ένα βαθμό και στην ιστορική εξέλιξη εν γένει των λαών της Μεσογείου. Για τη σφαιρική παρουσίαση του ζητήματος εξετάζεται, επίσης, στην παρούσα μελέτη, η πολιτική και πολιτιστική φυσιογνωμία τόσο των άλλων ηπειρωτικών εθνών, όσο και των πληθυσμών της μεθόριας ζώνης, μεταξύ χαονικών και ιλλυρικών φύλων.	el
heal.abstract	The widest and most significant tribal groups of ancient Epirus were the Chaones, the Thesprotians, the Molossians and the Cassopeans. The Chaones were the northwestern tribe of the Epirotic territory and the frontier of Hellenism against the Illyrians. On the modern map, Chaonia occupied, for the most part of the historical period, the present-day southwestern Albania. According to ancient traditions, on its shores were sailing and then settled, Argonauts, Colchians, Achaean and Trojan heroes, Phaeacians and also Phoenicians, Euboeans, Corinthians, Romans etc., which manifests on the one hand, its favorable position on land and especially on sea routes, that were connecting, economically and culturally, the North with the South, the East with the West and on the other, the natural wealth of the region, which attracted, throughout antiquity, for booty or alliance and cooperation, the adjacent or distant, “kin” or foreign, royal and tribal or civic and independent states. The present paper focuses, with the aid of the most important textual, numismatic, epigraphic and archaeological data, on the examination and presentation of the main geographical, geophysical, economic and tribal factors that shaped the social, political and cultural identity of the Chaonian ethnos, which directed its course through time, the latter also influencing, to a certain extent, the historical evolution of the peoples, at least of a part of the Mediterranean. For the overall presentation of the issue, this study also examines the political and cultural character of both the other Epirotic ethne and the populations of the border zone, between the Chaonian and Illyrian tribes.	en
