heal.abstract | According to a widespread view (Kratzer 1977 and subsequent work) modals arequantifiersover possible worlds, whose interpretation is heavily context dependent. On such an approach, grammatical factors are not readily expected to determine the available modal interpretations. We observe that grammatical aspect in Greek does precisely that: when perfective non-past is embedded under prepi ‘must’, only the deontic interpretation of the modal is available. The questions we address are (a) what the nature is of this clash between perfective non-past and epistemic interpretation of ‘must’ and (b) why only epistemic ‘must’, as opposed to deontic ‘must’ and to epistemic and root ‘may’, is sensitive to perfective aspect in this way. We derive the observation from the temporal properties of the perfective non-past and of epistemic ‘must’. While maintaining a Kratzerian approach to modals, we propose a modification of the structure of the epistemic modal base and of the workings of the ordering source, in order to explain the observed temporal properties of epistemic ‘must’. | en |
