| heal.abstract | The 18th century theories that develop on the basis of the concept of taste form a crucial stage in the history of Aesthetic Philosophy. Leaving behind the platonic and neoplatonic concepts of beauty, but also the strict neoclassical orthodoxy, these theories try to fix the anthropological foundation of our sense of beauty and enquiry into the depth of our aesthetic experience. This paper centers on three of the most eminent representatives of the empiricist tradition of aesthetics, a tradition which stresses the proximity of our sense of beauty with the external senses. Hutcheson, to start with, gives us the first philosophical aesthetic treatise, but, despite his empiricist epistemological commitments, remains faithful to the basic conceptions of the neoclassical tradition and to the ideas of Shaftesbury. Burke, on the other hand, draws the radical consequences of the empiricist approach, founding the sublime and the beautiful on the external senses and posing a serious challenge on the neoclassical values. Hume, finally, after having exposed the essential paradox of the relevant discussion, gives up the quest for objective qualities of beauty and seeks the standard of taste in the good critic. | en |
