| heal.abstract | Life sciences are situated, more than two centuries after their arising, in the center of an active criticism, of which the targets are the epistemological legitimacy of their experiments, the objectivity of their conclusions and the status of the relationship between empirical experimentation and rational methodology. Those three constitute one of the three main axes of the contemporary theoretical debate on life sciences. The second and the third axes around which the philosophical questioning on life moves are the ontology of the living and bioethics. The present paper is a short overview on the central questions which are related to the first two of the abovementioned axes, as viewed by two major contemporary philosophers, who nevertheless come from a totally different intelellectual background, Hans Jonas and Alain Renaut. Within this context, the living being is determined following either the mechanistic or the teleological epistemological paradigm. Finally, the critical issue of the limits within the living is raised under the light of the morphogenetic theory and methodology in contemporary biology. | en |
