| heal.abstract | In this paper I compare the four Aristotelian causes in Physics, Book II with Plato’s Phaedo and his argument that there are more than one kinds of causes. I claim that in the Phaedo we find strong evidences that there is a four-fold division of cause, which is strongly related with Aristotle’s distinction of formal, material, final and efficient cause. This means that the Aristotelian distinction is based on a solid Platonic background, and it is not just a reasonable consequence of the use of natural language, as the word «λέγεται» (194b24, 195a4) implies. However, Aristotle is the first one who examines the problem in a purely abstract philosophical way, and also he contributes original ideas by elaborating specific terms on a deeper philosophical level. | el |
