heal.abstractThis paper aims at giving a short account of the transmission of the ancient Greek mathematical sciences to the Arabs through the Arabic translations made during the cAbbasid dynasty from the 8th to 10th c. A. D.. The first part deals with the historical milieu within which the Greek tradition of mathematical thought was received by the Arabs and was cultivated alongside other native traditions of the Fertile Crescent. Then, with the advent of the cAbbasids as leaders of the Caliphate the interest in Greek mathematical works increased in order to meet practical and theoretical needs, such as educational, bureaucratic and other exigencies. The Greek mathematical syllabus of higher studies included arithmetic, geometry, astronomy and harmonics, known as quadrivium. The most important texts taught in the curriculum of the Greek schools of Late Antiquity were translated into Arabic, some of which are now lost in the Greek original. Finally attention is drawn upon influences the Greek tradition exerted in the formation of the Arabic sciences and technology. The Arabs studied the translated Greek works, wrote commentaries, paraphrases, summaries, collections of problems and independent treatises. Also they developed new fields and topics, like algebra and trigonometry. In turn, this scientific tradition influenced the Western European mathematical thought through Latin translations of Arabic texts made in the 12th - 14th c. A. D.en
