| heal.abstract | In this paper I examine some cases of recurrent themes and vocabulary in two earlier plays of Sophocles (the Ajax and the Antigone) and two later plays (the Electra and the Philoctetes). The themes examined are the following: a) civil obedience, b) personal honour, c) noble birth, d) persuasion and acquiescence. The poet employs certain significant words and variations on them. In case a) the words are: κλύειν - άκούειν - εΐκειν / οί έν τέλει - κρείσσονες - κρατούντες. The characters display different forms of civil obedience. In case b) we find: καλώς / αίσχρώς (ζην - θνήσκειν) / τιμής λαχεϊν. Honour is defined either by means of aristocratic standards or by universal ones. In case c) we find: άριστος - εύγενής - έσθλός / κακός and the verd πέφυκα. This vocabulary denotes either high social status or noble character which is inherited, or a moral quality which does not depend on high social status. Finally, in case d) the significant words are the verds μανθάνειν - νικάσθαι. Yet, the sophoclean heio does not «learn», does not «yield», does not «obey». | en |
