| heal.abstract | The engineers in interwar Greece: studies, professional careers, interconnections From the 1880s until the interwar period, the community of Greek engineers gradually came to be formed, with the creation of associations and professional organisations (the Technical Chamber of Greece was founded in 1923), as well as the publications of the specialist technical press. The research highlights the formation of this new social professional group by using the data for the first 2.048 members who were enrolled in the TCG Register (published in 1934). As these engineers were the only ones entitled to practice the engineering profession in Greece in the interwar, the article focuses on their studies and career development by examining a) the choices about the engineering studies in polytechnics in Greece and abroad· b) The professional careers of the engineers and their opportunities to gain access into the labour market· c) The social origins and the different (family, entrepreneurial, ethno-religious or other) networks, in which they participate. The research utilises, except the register of members of the TCG, the technical and economic press of the period and the Archive K. Vovolinis. | en |
