A significant number of archaeological sites of prehistoric and historic periods have been located in the district of Konitsa, bearing witness to the use of the region from the Stone Age to Late Antiquity. In this article, through the use of three sites as case studies (Liatovouni, Mesogephyra and Palaiogoritsa), we seek to explain the meaning of “Archaeological land-scapes” in the Konitsa district. The hill of Liatovouni overlooks Konitsa valley at the merging point of the rivers Aoos and Voidomatis. Rescue excavations in the early 1990s brought to light a cemetery with burials dated in the 10th and 5th c. B.C. and a settlement with two habitation phases (11th to 4th c. B.C.). In the hill of Mesogephyra traces of a circuit wall have been found along with pottery sherds ranging from the Early Iron Age to the Hellenistic period. A few years ago architectural remains of a large building and of other smaller around it dated in the 4th c. B.C. came to light. In the low hill of Palaiogoritsa Hammond mentions the line of a circuit wall, pottery and bronze finds. Unfortunately the construction of a modern silo and the extensive buldozing and building work for the construction of an access road affected the archaeological data. An impressive number of broken roof tiles of Classical and later date, pottery of different periods, a fragmentary bronze statue of Roman date and an inscribed funerary stele (3rd to 1st c. B.C.) were delivered to the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina. Liatovouni, Mesogephyra and Palaiogoritsa have as a common denominator the fact that they constitute sites appropriate for the practice of agriculture and of animal husbandry around the slopes of the neighboring mountains.en
