| heal.abstract | This paper presents Plato’s theory of love as it is developed mainly in his dialogues Symposium and Phaedrus. It is commonly known that Plato’s theory of love is connected with the theory of ideas in the Symposium and with the theory of ideas and the theory of immortality of the soul in the Phaedrus. Therefore, these aforementioned theories are only briefly presented, in order to better understand and evaluate Plato’s theory of love. Plato’s theory of knowledge as recollection is also mentioned in this context. One of the central points of Plato’s theory of love is beauty in its ideal or in its sensible form. The emphasis is on the rational character of erotic desire in the Symposium, something that is paradoxical, since the common man considers love (eros) to be just the opposite. The rationality of love, although less severe, is also found in the second speech of Socrates in the Phaedrus (love is here the madness (mania) of reason). Since only reason in Plato’s thought can be the force, which directs man to the completion of his highest aspirations, it becomes clear why rational love, as Plato conceives it, is responsible for every good that can happen to man (access to thuth, real virtue, happiness, etc.). | en |
