| heal.abstract | This paper aims to bring for discussion fragments of female presence from the twisted yet fascinating material of court records. After a brief overview of the relationship between court records and women's history in international and Greek literature, the article focuses on the example of the interwar archive of the Thessaloniki Plenary Court. It briefly assesses the female participation by category of offences and highlights the frequent presence of women from the lower strata in cases related to interpersonal tensions within the context of the daily struggle for survival. The main part of the article isolates and analyses examples of cases in which women are identified within workplaces or because of their participation in the labour movement. The archival material engages in conversation with existing literature and the basic representation of women in the interwar period as both victims of exploitation and front women of labour movements. The analysis of cases of labour law violations highlights the tendency of intensified exploitation of women workers in large factory spaces, while cases of 'seduction', snapshots of sexual violence and exploitation by colleagues, employers and intermediaries demonstrate the m uch-discussed moral danger hidden in the same spaces and in the search for work, especially for young women of refugee origin and internal migrants. Violations of the anti-communist law “Idionym ο”, but especially cases o f insults or overtures to public servants, describe the dynam ic female participation in the interwar labour, communist movement. W om en industrial workers, mainly tobacco workers, were arrested for violating the "freedom of work" law, participating in "red schools" and forming task forces in "sidewalk struggles". Although female participation in all of the above is valued significantly less than male participation, a thorough investigation of the court decisions and the turning over and reclassification of the archival material sheds light "from below" but also more fully on the female presence in the workplace and the labour movement in the inter-war period, raising questions for more in-depth study. | en |
