| heal.abstract | The paper offers a critical discussion of Indo - European linguistics from its inception in the late 18th century with the historic statement of Sir William Jones in 1786 to the present with the attempts to see Indo-European as part of the larger picture of the world’s languages. It is claimed that the nineteenth century is the crucial period, when one can see three phases, namely the early phase with the founders of the Indo-European linguistic family Bopp, Grimm, and Rask (1800 -1850), the second phase with the works of Schleicher, Schmidt and others (1850 -1875), and the third phase with the appearance of the Neogrammarians and the relevant debate over their ideas (1876 if.). The twentieth century represents the mature phase of Indo-European, a period enriched by the evidence amassed, the addition of new languages to the family, the further development and refinement of the comparative method and other methodological tools, the numerous analytic accounts of each individual language as well as synthetic works of the family as a whole. Finally, a brief discussion is given with regard to interdisciplinary approaches, the combined study of linguistic evidence and material culture (linguistic paleontology), the merits of typology, as well as the use of genetics in the study of the prehistory and the classification of languages. | en |
