| heal.abstract | The writer, drawing his information from unpublished sources of the Greek Foreign Ministry, examines the educational and social situation of the Constantinopolitan Greek community during the decade of 1920, which was marked by the Asian Minor disaster and its destructive consequences. Namely, the writer investigates: a) the position of the Greek element in Turkey, the gradual diminution of the Greek community of Constantinople and the causes of this event, b) the fact that Turkey violated the clauses of the Treaty of Lausanne which provided the protection of minorities, c) the unfriendly attitude of Turkey towards the Ecumenical Patriarchate, that aimed at the removal of the Patriarchate from Constantinople and later the reduction of its authority, d) the extremely difficult conditions, under which Constantinopolitan Greek schools operated, that had as a result the gradual decrease in the number of the Greek students, c) the important social services offered by the Greek hospitals and orphanages of Constantinople. After 1922 the Constantinopolitan Greek community lived under extreme pressure and restrictions that decidedly limited the educational and social activities. Ankara, despite the obligations it took on by signing the Treaty of Lausanne, sought for the turkification of the Greek element or its expulsion from the native land. | el |
