| heal.abstract | A number of recently located findspots in the district of Ioannina have enriched the information on the exploitation of its landscapes during the Stone Age. Stone artefacts collected from surface locations in the vicinity of the Ioannina basin confirm hunter-gatherer activity during both the Middle and the Upper Palaeolithic; the area was attractive because of its affluence in natural resources (water, prey, raw materials) and the access of passage to and from the Ioannina lake. Moreover, multi-period stone artefacts (Palaeolithic to Bronze Age) were located in the northwestern part of the Ioannina district, by the Greco-Albanian border. The surface finds compliment the archaeological record provided by excavated sites and are comparable to archaeological evidence from neighboring areas. | en |
