| heal.abstract | This article (the fourth in the present series) is a full treatment of the pottery from the 2000 survey at the site of Mycenaean Salamis, focusing on the analysis of the repertoire of vase-shapes. Extensive clearing works conducted in September 2000 by a team from the University of Ioannina, under the direction of Y. G. Lolos, on the Mycenaean acropolis of Salamis, at the site of Kanakia, produced a large quantity of pottery. The bulk of the material, consisting of decorated and plain sherds, falls within the Late Helladic III B- III C: early period. Four Late Mycenaean vases have already been, fully or partly, reconstructed: two tripod cooking pots, two deep bowls, a pedestalled krater, bearing clear traces of burning and the upper part of a plain amphora. Identifiable in our material are at least 40 different vase-shapes1. Of special interest are fragments belonging to at least five different bath-tubs (asaminthoi). Thirty one (31) shapes occur in fine wares (plain or decorated): piriform jar; collar-necked jar; amphora/hydria/jug; alabastron; narrow-necked jug (?); feeding bottle (?); stirrup jar; flask; pedestalled krater; krater with conical foot; conical cup; mug; carinated conical cup; nippled ladle; spouted cup; short-stemmed goblet; high-stemmed goblet or kylix; deep bowl krater (ring-based krater); deep bowl; deep bowl with vertical handles; kalathos, simple or spouted; basin; small basin; deep bowl krater with spout; spouted basin; stemmed bowl; closed pot with solid cylindrical base, wishbone- handled open vase; shallow bowl; miniature cup. Nine (9) shapes are present in coarse and semi-coarse wares: one-handled or two handled cooking pot; pithos; medium-sized pithoid vase; tripod cooking pot; basin with strap handles; handless basin/bowl; baking tray or pan; lid; bath-tub. In an Appendix, surveying recent scientific methods of analyses of ceramics, the first results of organic residue analysis applied to Salaminian ceramics, within the context of a systematic programme entitled “Minoans and Mycenaeans, Flavours of their Time, Food and Drink in Bronze Age Greece” (2002), are cited. 1.
