| heal.abstract | Vision as a specific means of perceiving the world comes under the scrunity of Sophocles who returns over and over again to the shifting and distorting qualities of visionary perception (cfr. O.T, O.C). Lack of security and uncertainty in and about vision form an essential dynamic of the texts of tragedy. This paper directs attention to the pattern of sight and seeing in Sophocles* Ajax, a drama which offers a particularly valuable insight into this topic. For not only does the poet use a considerable number of terms denoting vision but he also draws further attention to the role of vision itself in the process of the communication on-stage. In this way visionary perception becomes a thematic consideration of the play that makes Ajax a «drama of vision». | en |
