| heal.abstract | In ancient ivory carving, apart from elephant tusks were also used hippopotamus teeth (incisors and canines). Both materials are hard and tough, whereas the presence of raw materials (elephant tusks) in places where wealthy and powerful people were living, reveals the worth and value of this material. The teeth of hippopotamus were used adequately in areas like Syria, Palaestine, Cyprus and Aegean. The basic criteria of recognition of both materials and the systematic study and research consist the tools which will lead the expert to the recognition and identification of the material under certain conditions, of course. For example the recognition criteria cannot always consist definite recognisable guide if the objects are damaged, burnt, and if they do not offer definite helpful indications and elements. | en |
