| heal.abstract | By the time Justinian I came to the throne in 527 A.D., Agapetus, a Deacon in the Great Church of God in Constantinople, i. e. Hagia Sofia, addressed to the Emperor an Έκθεσις Κεφαλαίων Παραινετικών (Exposition of Chapters of Advice). The identification of the author is impossible and the Ekthesis is dated between 527 and 548. The numerous manuscripts of the work are late in date and the established text is that of Migne’s edition in the P.G. 86. Rhetorical influence and isokratic tradition are clearly reflected in the 72 small chapters of the work. Despite the lack of any original ideas, the deacon tells us about theological notions of empire and political theory of the imperial dignity current in the sixth century. Agapetus’work is an early example of «Mirror of Princes» and the maxims provide correspodences to some fragments contained in Flori- legia as well as to the greek version of the story of Barlaam and Joasaph the later Chapters of the Emperor Basil I and a similar work of the Emperor Manuel II. | en |
