| heal.abstract | Thucydides I 46,4 speaks of the doric city Ephyra noticing it not with its correct doric form, but with its ionic one, Έφνρη. The Mss preserve the reading Έφνρη here, as well as the evidence offered by the indirect tradition. In a small digression, he describes briefly the territory around the Χειμέριον άκρα which embraces the town Ephyra. Some scholars have argued that Thucydides was influenced here by the style of Periegesis / Periplus, — works established by the Iones logographers —, and more possibly by that of Hecateus. But I think that the language of this passage also betrays influence of the Periplus, because ionisms occur, sush as Έφνρη. Although Thespro- tian Έφνρη was known from Homer and especially from Odysseus’ travels, as he seems to visit it in ordert to Buy poison (a 259). Odysseus had also visited νεκυομαντεϊον (Oracle of the Dead), which was nearby to Έφύρη and at the junction of the river Acheron with two other ones (κ 513-514), during his long return home (νόστος), which was a kind of Periplus. Thucydides seems here to treat masterly his subject of digression by the combination of the two genres, Periplus and Epos. So he incorporates them into his digression leaving obvious traces in style and language, one of which is Έφνρη. | en |
