| heal.abstract | Calcium phosphate glasses and glass ceramics in the system xCaO. (1-x)P2O5 (0(.)50 <= x <= 0.72) have been prepared for the first time and studied by Raman and infrared spectroscopy. Glass preparation was also obtained for x=0.75 with the addition of about 10 mol% B2O3. Glasses were prepared from melts using a twin roller device and the glass ceramics after their appropriate two-step heat treatment for nucleation and crystallisation. Raman spectra have shown the presence of phosphate chains with one or two NBOs at CaO contents around the metaphosphate composition. Very high calcium contents (x > 0.60) cause the depolymerisation of the network, which is finally disrupted and consists of pyrophosphate and orthophosphate units. The infrared spectrum of the glass containing boron revealed the presence of BO3 and BO4 units in the phosphate network. The x-ray diffraction patterns of the thermally treated glasses show precipitation of bioresorbable crystalline phases, such as beta-Ca-3(PO4)(2) (beta TCP) and beta-Ca2P2O7 (beta DCP). The glasses were exposed to a stimulated body fluid solution (SBF) for several time periods and then examined by means of Raman micro-spectroscopy. In the glass surface of 0-75CaO.0(.)25P(2)O(5)-10%B2O3 glass the development of hydroxyapatite microcrystals was observed. | en |
