| heal.abstract | The article discusses the role of collective labor agreements in the manufacturing sector in Greece between 1964 and 1971, from the perspective of social history and the history of work. From 1935 until 1990, a system of compulsory arbitration under government control reduced the scope of collective agreements and contracts to the regulation of m inimum wages across broad manufacturing sectors and professions. However, despite their limited scope, collective agreements were actually rich in social meaning regarding work in manufacture. The categorization of the workforce along age, gender and skill lines produced subjective and often contradictory perceptions of skilled, unskilled, “underage”, male and female work. Further research is needed to identify the ways in which these meanings were interpreted and contested by workers, employers and trade unions in the various production sectors and professions. | en |
