Description
The present work constitutes the final version of my doctoral thesis entitled “An Empirical
Analysis of Macroeconomic and Demographic Shocks on the Rise of Populism in Europe and the
Erosion of EU Identity” which is submitted for approval to the Department of Economics at the
University of Ioannina. The writing and completion of it would have been impossible without the
help and guidance of professors and esteemed scholars, as well as the understanding and support
of my family and friends.
The excellent teaching of my professors in the Department of Economics during my undergraduate
and postgraduate studies and their subsequent support and guidance prepared me excellently to
meet the increased demands of the doctoral program. Specifically, I would like to express my
gratitude to the members of the seven-member committee who evaluated and improved this thesis
with their comments, suggestions, and observations, as well as to the members of the three-member
committee for their continuous guidance. Additionally, I would like to express my gratitude and
thank personally Prof. Nikos Benos for his constructive suggestions and comments which were
crucial in the extension and enrichment of all the parts of my thesis and in completing the text
and also for the interest he showed to me during my studies.
Of course, it would be extremely difficult for me to not mention my infinite love and gratitude
to Prof. Anastasia Litina. This thesis could not exist without her help, patience, and guidance
in my endless intellectual wanderings, her moral support during the challenging moments of this
amazing research journey. Anastasia is the first person who introduced me to this topic, giving
me all her knowledge and scientific experience, the inspiration I needed in order to continue my
research and fulfill my dreams, giving me also the opportunity to participate in valuable academic
activities.
My research journey would have been incomplete without the significant contribution of professors
and students in several conferences in which I have participated during my studies. Just to
mention a few, I would like to thank all the participants at the 15th CESifo Workshop on Political
Economy, Max Planck Summer School on the Political Economy of Conflict and Redistribution,
DEM Workshop on Ageing, Culture, and Comparative Development, AMEF Conference 2023, 2nd
Workshop on Gender and Economics at the University of Luxembourg and the Toulouse School
in Economics and Political Institutions. Additionally, I would like to thank Prof. Andreas Irmen,
Massimo Morelli, Dimitris Minos, Enrico Spolaore, Skerdiljda Zanaj, Alberto Simpser, Matthias
Doepke, Mariko Klasing, Petros Milionis, Alessandra Casar, Kai Konrad and Rony Razin for their
valuable comments and suggestions that have been implemented in all the chapters. Of course, I
would also like to express my gratitude and thank the participants of my Department Research
Seminar Series and particularly, Prof. Dimitris Dadakas, Vasilis Logothetis, Nikos Mylonidis, Nikos
Tsakiris for their supportive comments and advice throughout my entire Ph.D. thesis.
Last but not least, many sincere and special thanks to my parents Paraskevi and Ioannis, for
their guidance, love, and continuous support all these years, encouraging me to pursue all my
dreams. Additionally, my gratitude and many thanks to my partner and colleague Andreas for his
encouragement and support during the years of my Ph.D. and his indispensable help in carrying
out my research and to my colleagues and friends Dimitra and Ilias for the time we spent together
discussing my topic and for their suggestions in the writing part of my thesis.
