heal.abstractThe purpose of this work is to investigate the intercultural competence of primary education teachers, specifically teachers who graduated from the Pedagogical Department of Elementary Education of the University of Ioannina. The research involved male and female teachers who studied at the department from 2013 to 2023. It was chosen to carry out a study on teachers who studied over a decade, specific from 2013 to2023, in order to make a comparison of both years regarding the availability of intercultural education courses, as to if they have increased, or the opposite if the have decreased in the number of the offered courses as well as whether there are differences in the way intercultural education is perceived by teachers who have studied between this period. The purpose of the research is to investigate the intercultural competence of teachers, graduates of PTDE Ioannina based on their knowledge and experience. In this present study reference is first made to the historical path that have been followed by intercultural education in Greece. Also, the terms “intercultural competence” and “intercultural readiness” are clarified. Then, the main characteristics of interculturally competent teachers are presented as well as the main roles they are called up on to assume in multicultural classrooms. Then they are presented the basic characteristics of intercultural competent teachers as well as the basic roles that they are asked to assume in order to take on such a classroom. Then, the teachers follow some basic management practices of multicultural classrooms with special reference to the extensive programs but also with appropriate activities. The data collected from this specific research that was carried out on teachers who have graduated from the University as well as the discussion and the conclusions thereof are referred to in the second part of the study.en
