heal.abstractThis paper presents the framework of a microcontroller-based approach for a computer architecture laboratory course intending to reinforce the educational level of non-electricallelectronic students, placing the emphasis on hardware and software design issues for embedded computers. The difficulties encountered in this approach are related to a) focusing students' attention on efficient use of the laboratory's equipment instead of tutoring, a common risk in technological courses, b) overcoming the comprehension barriers that are a consequence of the educational level of the students. The former issue is addressed by the design of appropriate equipment for the laboratory, the latter by a pedagogical strategy that is based on representational and interpretational picture examples. The proposed methodology proved to help in bridging the gap between the design problem and the students' semi-formal design view, without missing the essential details of the tutoring.en
